Job Boards are Not the (Only) Answer
Online job boards are crutches. Hiring managers who rely on them solely for recruiting purposes are doing their organizations an extreme disservice. And candidates who rely on them are doing themselves the same disservice.
According to an ERE.net post, thousands of new job boards are on the way. Great.
It’s important to note I’m a bit of a hypocrite here. When I set out to build Come Recommended, I debated with myself whether or not to include a job board as a feature. The whole idea behind Come Recommended’s goal of “connecting the best internship and entry-level job candidates with the best employers” is the connection part. Posting a position to a job board is not connecting with candidates, and applying for a position posted on a job board is not connecting with employers.
Alas, I felt some members would be attracted by the free job board and ended up including it. Part of me now regrets that decision.
I’ve always told candidates that job boards should be part of their overall search strategy. After all, hiring managers do use them. But, neither party should complain when they don’t achieve their desired results. Broaden your horizons when it comes to filling or landing a position! Connect. Network. TALK.
What do you think 2010 will bring for the job board industry?
