Don’t Worry, Be HAPPO
Even though I help students and recent graduates in all fields find, land and succeed in internships and entry-level jobs, my journey down this path started with my first career: public relations. In 2003, I founded EntryLevelPR.com, which became EntryLevel-PR.com in 2005 when the original domain name was “stolen” (I apparently didn’t lock it) and put on sale for $200,000. Unfortunately, the site became too much for me to keep up, and is now simply housed on LinkedIn as #PRintern | #EntryPR. I actually think the site is more helpful than ever, featuring great discussions, wonderful reads, and of course, plentiful PR internship and entry-level job opportunities.
It only makes sense for me to be a Washington, DC “champion” for a new initiative known as HAPPO. Help a PR Pro Out Day is designed to help connect PR job seekers with employers looking for top talent. On Friday, February 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern Time, PR bloggers, agency leaders, and PR professionals from across the country (myself included) will donate their time and talents to help fellow PR pros connect with employers as part of the first-ever event. While I’ll be representing #HAPPODC along with Mike Schaffer, there are plenty of other individuals getting involved across the country.
Not only will I “help fellow PR pros connect with employers” during HAPPO, but I’m also giving away copies of my first published book #ENTRYLEVELtweet: Taking Your Career from Classroom to Cubicle (2010) and the e-books Relocating for an Entry-Level Job: Why You Probably Have to & How to Do It (2010) and Graduated, Unemployed & Un(der)insured: Why You Need to Stop What You’re Doing Right Now To Purchase Health Insurance and How to Pick the Provider & Plan Best for You (out Feb. 15, 2010).
How to Win:
You can gain points to win by doing the following:
- Tweet about this blog post (be sure to include blog post title, link, @heatherhuhman and #HAPPO or #HAPPODC) = 1 point
- Comment on this blog post (be sure your comment adds something of value) = 5 points
- Write a blog post related to #HAPPO or #HAPPODC and this giveaway on your own blog and link back = 10 points
The three participants with the most points will win and be notified after 3 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, February 19.
Other notes:
Obviously, I reserve the right to disqualify participants if cheating or otherwise unethical conduct is suspected.

A bit confused about the Feb 19 HAPPO event. Is this geared to entry-level “top talent” job seekers, or for anyone – even the seasoned “top talent” job seekers like myself? Great idea either way.

Wow Heather I didn’t know #PRintern | #EntryPR was originally a website. I love receiving my daily emails with great information. This whole HAPPO thing is such a great idea. Nearing graduation, the whole project will definitely be one to continue yearly I’m sure. The community I know an interact with on Twitter (including yourself) has really helped me grow as a PR student. Over the past few months I’ve learned so much and would probably be so lost without each person I’ve come in contact with. I actually started writing a post in my blog about HAPPO and hope to finish it before next week. See you in a few weeks!!!

Thank you very much for mentioning me on your blog. To add a bit to my post (since that was the 140 character version) I’ve worked in the often misunderstood realm of sports information. While we are the people that can make or break an athletic department, we are often looked at as the “stat guy” or the “website guy.” As an SID it is my responsibility to not only maintain the stats and the website, but to also act as the point person for marketing efforts as well as all public relations efforts. It is my duty to contact local media outlets to promote our department and to answer all media inquiries.
I think this #HAPPO thing is a great idea and shows the relevance of social media as not only a marketing tool, but as a networking tool. If you want to find a job anywhere in the country, make sure you follow all of the people who are making #HAPPO great!

Hi Heather,
Thanks again for posting my pitch on your blog. I really appreciate everything that you and the other “Help a PR Pro Out” champions are doing across the Internet. The job search can be stressful, so it’s wonderful that people are willing to help newcomers like myself as well as seasoned pros in the field.

I am all about education, and if you are interested in PR what better way to learn than from people who are in the field and know a thing or two. This is a great innovative idea. I think it speaks volumes about the PR pros who are willing to take the time and energy to educate and network with the future of their business too. Wishing you the best success with HAPPO!

Hi Heather!
Thanks again for posting my pitch–I really appreciate it. I have already started to spread the word about HAPPO to my fellow PRSSA members and PR classmates at our School of Journalism. I agree that #HAPPO is a wonderful idea and resource. It ties in nicely with the thought that “social media is a medium, NOT a strategy.”

That sounds like a really good opportunity. Students learn so much more from practitioners and actual work than in uni. So more PR practitioners should be open for training graduates because so far it`s really hard to break into the business.
